Fonts do quiet but powerful work in print: they set the tone, guide the eye, and decide how easily your message is read. Good type choices go unnoticed; bad ones make a piece look cheap or hard to read. You do not need to be a typographer to choose well, just a few principles. Here they are.
Serif vs. sans-serif
| Serif | Sans-serif | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Traditional, established | Modern, clean |
| Feel | Trust, heritage | Approachable, current |
| Body text | Great in print | Also fine in print |
| Common in | Law, finance, publishing | Tech, retail, modern brands |
The two-font rule
Pick one font for headlines and one for body text, and stop there. A classic, reliable pairing is a serif paired with a sans-serif, they contrast clearly without clashing. Using three or more fonts almost always looks chaotic. Two fonts, used consistently, look intentional and professional.
Limit a piece to two fonts (one for headlines, one for body), make sure body text is genuinely readable at its printed size, and match the font's personality to your business. Restraint and readability matter far more than picking a trendy typeface.
Readability above all
In print, especially body text, readability wins over style. Avoid ultra-thin weights that disappear when printed small, overly decorative fonts for anything long, and tight spacing that crowds letters. Test at the actual print size, not zoomed in on screen, what reads fine on a monitor can be a struggle on paper.
Embed your fonts
When you send a print file, embed or outline the fonts so they do not substitute on our system, see the prepress checklist. For card-specific font advice, see best fonts for business cards.
