Booklets with different binding methods

When you print anything multi-page, a catalog, program, manual, or report, how it is bound shapes how it looks, how long it lasts, and what it costs. The right binding depends on page count, budget, and how the piece will be used. Here are the common methods and when each makes sense.

Common binding methods

MethodHow it worksBest for
Saddle stitchFolded, stapled at the spineThin booklets (up to ~64 pp)
Perfect boundGlued square spineThicker books, catalogs
Spiral / coilPlastic or metal coilManuals, anything lay-flat
Wire-OTwin-loop wirePremium lay-flat docs

Saddle stitch: the workhorse

Saddle stitching, folding sheets and stapling at the spine, is the most common and economical choice for thinner booklets: programs, newsletters, short catalogs, up to roughly 64 pages. It is fast, cheap, and clean-looking. Beyond that page count, the staples cannot hold and you move to perfect or coil binding.

Key takeaway

Page count drives the choice: saddle stitch for thin booklets (economical, clean), perfect bound for thicker books with a printable square spine, and coil or Wire-O when the piece must lay flat (manuals, workbooks). Match the binding to thickness and use.

When to choose the others

  • Perfect bound gives a professional square spine you can print on, ideal for thicker catalogs and books, and looks the most “finished.”
  • Spiral/coil lets a document lay completely flat and fold back on itself, perfect for manuals, cookbooks, and workbooks.
  • Wire-O offers the same lay-flat benefit with a more premium look.

Plan page count in fours

Saddle-stitched booklets work in multiples of four pages (a folded sheet makes four). Designing to that math avoids blank pages. We help you plan page count and pick the binding that fits. See our digital printing options, and read printing programs for events. Request a free quote.
