Coated and uncoated paper samples

Two papers of the same weight can feel and look completely different depending on whether they are coated. The coating, or lack of it, changes how colors print, how the surface feels, and whether you can write on it. Choosing right makes your print look intentional. Here is the difference and how to decide.

Coated vs. uncoated

When to choose coated

Coated paper has a sealed surface that keeps ink crisp on top, so colors look vivid and photos look sharp. It is the right choice for marketing pieces where images pop: brochures, postcards, flyers, catalogs. The trade-off is you cannot easily write on it, and it has a slicker feel.

When to choose uncoated

Uncoated paper absorbs ink into the fibers, giving a softer, more natural look and a tactile feel. Crucially, you can write on it, which makes it the right call for letterhead, forms, invoices, notepads, and anything someone needs to fill in by hand. It feels classic and understated.

Key takeaway

Choose coated when vivid color and sharp images matter (marketing pieces), and uncoated when the paper needs to be written on or feel natural (letterhead, forms, notes). If people will put a pen to it, go uncoated.

Matte, satin, or gloss

Coated paper comes in finishes: gloss (shiniest, most vivid, can glare), satin/silk (in between), and matte (smooth but low-glare, easier to read). For business cards specifically, the choice also affects writability, see matte vs. glossy business cards.
