A business card has room for maybe twenty words, so every one of them has to be legible at arm’s length. Font choice is what makes that happen, or what quietly undermines an otherwise sharp design. The right typeface reads instantly and signals exactly the right tone; the wrong one looks dated, cramped, or hard to trust. Here is how to choose.
What makes a font work on a card
| Quality | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Legibility at small size | Cards print tiny; thin or ornate fonts break down |
| Clear numerals | Phone numbers must read perfectly |
| Limited weights | A family with regular + bold covers a whole card |
| Tone match | The font should fit your industry’s feel |
Safe, professional choices
You rarely go wrong with a clean sans-serif or a classic serif. Sans-serifs like Helvetica, Open Sans, Lato, and Montserrat read as modern and approachable. Serifs like Garamond, Georgia, and Caslon feel established and trustworthy, good for law, finance, and consulting. Pair one of each at most: a serif headline with a sans-serif body, or the reverse.
Use no more than two fonts, and make sure the smallest text (your phone and email) is still crisp at print size. If a font's numbers are hard to read at 8 point, it does not belong on a business card.
Fonts to avoid
- Script and handwriting fonts for body text. Fine for a single accent word, unreadable for an address.
- Ultra-thin weights that disappear when printed small.
- Novelty fonts (Comic Sans, Papyrus, anything “fun”) that undercut credibility.
- More than two families, which makes a card look chaotic.
Match the font to your work
A tattoo studio and a tax office should not use the same typeface. Bold, characterful fonts suit creative and trades work; restrained serifs and clean sans-serifs suit professional services. The font is part of your brand voice, pick one that says what you do before anyone reads a word.
Print cards that read sharp
We print full-color business cards on quality stock and will flag any font that prints too thin or small before it costs you a reprint. See our business card options, and review standard card dimensions before you design. Request a free quote.
