The standard US business card is 3.5 by 2 inches. That number is worth knowing, because it is the size that fits every wallet, cardholder, and Rolodex on the continent. But “standard” is not your only option, and knowing when to break from it is what separates a card that gets kept from one that gets tossed.
The standard size and why it works
| Region | Standard size |
|---|---|
| United States & Canada | 3.5 x 2 in |
| Europe | 85 x 55 mm |
| Most of Asia/Oceania | 90 x 55 mm |
The 3.5 x 2 inch US standard is the safe default for one practical reason: it fits everything. Wallets, business card binders, and scanners all expect it. If you want your card to actually be kept and used, standard size is rarely the wrong call.
Setting up the file: bleed and safe zone
A card that prints correctly has three zones built into the file.
| Zone | Size (for a 3.5 x 2 card) | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Trim | 3.5 x 2 in | The final cut size |
| Bleed | 3.75 x 2.25 in (1/8 in extra) | Background extends past trim so no white edges |
| Safe zone | 3.25 x 1.75 in (1/8 in inside) | Keep text and logo inside this to avoid being cut |
The two mistakes that ruin cards: background color that stops exactly at the edge (causes white slivers) and text placed too close to the edge (gets trimmed off). Extend backgrounds into the bleed and pull important content into the safe zone.
What every card must include
Whatever the size, a working business card answers “who are you and how do I reach you” instantly:
- Name and title
- Business name and logo
- Phone and email
- Website
- One thing that makes you memorable (a tagline, a QR code, or a striking design)
Resist the urge to cram. White space makes a card feel premium and keeps the essentials readable.
When to go custom
A non-standard card can be a smart marketing move when the format reinforces your brand: rounded corners, square cards, fold-over cards with extra room, or premium finishes. Just weigh it against practicality, an oversized card that won’t fit a wallet may not survive the trip home.
