A QR code can be the smartest thing on your business card or pure clutter, and the difference is entirely about what it does when scanned. Done right, it turns a small paper card into a doorway to your whole digital presence. Done lazily, it is a gray square that points nowhere useful. Here is how to decide.
When a QR code earns its space
A QR code is worth including when it saves the recipient real effort. Good destinations:
| Scan goes to | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Save-contact (vCard) | One tap adds you to their phone |
| Your website or portfolio | See your work instantly |
| A booking / scheduling page | Turns a card into an appointment |
| A special offer | Gives a reason to scan now |
| Google review page | Makes leaving a review effortless |
When to skip it
If the code just opens your homepage that is already printed on the card, it adds nothing. Do not include a QR code out of obligation. Every element on a card should earn its place, and a code that duplicates printed info does not.
A QR code should do something the printed text cannot, like save your contact in one tap or book an appointment. If it only opens the website you already listed, leave it off and keep the card clean.
Design rules so it actually scans
- Keep it at least 0.8 in square. Smaller and phones struggle.
- Maintain quiet space (a clear margin) around the code.
- High contrast only. Dark code on a light background; never light-on-dark or color-on-color.
- Test the printed card, not just the screen, before the full run.
- Use a stable URL you control, so the destination can change without reprinting.
Put it on the back
A QR code usually belongs on the back of the card, where it has room and does not crowd your name and contact info. That keeps the front clean and human while the back does the digital work. See double-sided business cards for more on using that space.
