A business card is a tiny piece of real estate doing one job: making it easy for someone to remember you and reach you. The temptation is to cram in everything; the skill is knowing what to leave off. Here is the short list of what earns a spot and what does not.
The essentials
| Element | Include? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Always | The person, not just the company |
| Title / role | Usually | Tells people how you can help |
| Company name + logo | Always | Brand recognition |
| Phone | Always | The number people actually use |
| Always | Professional address, not personal | |
| Website | Usually | Where to learn more |
| Physical address | If relevant | Skip if you are mobile/online |
| Social handle | One, maybe | Only the one that matters |
What to leave off
More is not better. A fax number nobody uses, three phone numbers, five social icons, a tagline and a QR code and a mission statement, all of it competes for the same tiny space and buries the things people actually need. Pick the one phone number and one email you want people to use, and cut the rest.
Include only what someone needs to contact you and remember what you do. If an item would not change whether or how a customer reaches you, it is probably clutter. White space is more valuable than a fifth way to call you.
Layout that gets used
- Name and company most prominent. These anchor the card.
- Contact details grouped together, easy to scan in one glance.
- One clear call to action if you have room: “Call for a free quote” beats a blank corner.
- Leave breathing room. A clean card reads as more professional than a packed one.
Use the back, too
The back of a double-sided card is free space most people waste. Use it for a logo, a tagline, a QR code, a short service list, or an appointment reminder, anything that adds value without crowding the front. More on that in double-sided business cards.
