If you bill by mail, a small addition makes a measurable difference: a return envelope tucked into the invoice. Removing even one tiny obstacle, finding an envelope and writing your address, gets invoices paid sooner. These are called remittance or return envelopes, and they are a low-cost way to smooth your cash flow. Here is how they work.
The types
| Type | Who pays postage | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Plain return envelope | Customer | Most billing |
| Courtesy reply | Customer (pre-addressed) | Faster, fewer errors |
| Business reply (BRM) | You, only if used | High-value, response-sensitive |
Why they speed payment
A remittance envelope is pre-addressed to you, so the customer just folds the check inside and mails it. No hunting for an envelope, no looking up your address, no excuse to set the bill aside “until later.” Less friction means faster payment, the whole point.
Every bit of friction between a customer and paying you costs time. A pre-addressed return envelope removes a step and a reason to delay. For mailed billing, it is one of the cheapest ways to get paid faster and reduce misdirected payments.
Courtesy reply vs. business reply
A courtesy reply envelope is pre-addressed but the customer adds the stamp, simple and cheap for you. A business reply envelope lets the customer mail it without a stamp and you pay postage only on the ones returned, worth it when maximizing response matters more than per-piece cost.
Sized to fit your mailing
Remittance envelopes are often #9, sized to slip inside a #10 outer envelope with your invoice. We print them pre-addressed and matched to your mailing. See our envelope options, and review envelope sizes. Request a free quote.
