When you order a rigid sign, two materials come up most often: foam board and coroplast (corrugated plastic). They look similar at a glance but suit completely different jobs, one for indoor presentation, one for outdoor durability. Choosing wrong means a sign that warps in the rain or one that is overbuilt for a conference table. Here is how to pick.
Side by side
| Foam board | Coroplast | |
|---|---|---|
| Made of | Foam core between paper | Fluted plastic |
| Indoor / outdoor | Indoor | Outdoor |
| Weather resistance | Low (warps when wet) | High (waterproof) |
| Rigidity | Very flat and rigid | Flexible, stake-ready |
| Best for | Presentations, displays | Yard signs, outdoor use |
| Lifespan | Short-term indoor | Months+ outdoors |
When to choose foam board
Foam board is lightweight, perfectly flat, and rigid, ideal for indoor use: presentation boards, event signage, photo mounts, trade show displays, and point-of-purchase signs. Its smooth surface looks crisp up close. The catch: it is not weatherproof and will warp if it gets wet, so keep it inside.
When to choose coroplast
Coroplast is the standard for outdoor signs. The fluted plastic is waterproof, durable, and the channels accept wire stakes, which is why it is the default for yard signs, real estate signs, and construction signage. It is not as perfectly flat as foam board, but it survives Alaska weather for months. See yard signs guide.
Indoors and need a crisp, flat board? Foam board. Outdoors and need it to survive weather? Coroplast. The single deciding question is whether the sign will get wet, foam board warps, coroplast shrugs it off.
