Two cards can look identical and feel completely different in the hand, and that feel is doing real work. A substantial card signals a substantial business. The difference comes down to paper: its weight, its finish, and any premium upgrades. Here is how to read the options.
How card stock is measured
Card thickness is usually given in points (pt), where 1 pt = 1/1000 inch, or in pounds (lb), the weight of a ream. For business cards, points are the clearer guide.
| Stock | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 12 pt | Light, economical | Budget runs, short-term use |
| 14 pt | Standard professional | The everyday default |
| 16 pt | Noticeably substantial | Most businesses, great value |
| 18 to 32 pt | Thick, premium | Luxury, memorable first impression |
The sweet spot
For most businesses, 14 to 16 pt is the right call: it feels professional and holds up in a wallet without driving up cost. Drop to 12 pt only for short-lived promotional cards. Step up to 18 pt or thicker when the card itself is part of a premium impression, think high-end services, real estate, or hospitality.
14 to 16 pt is the professional default that balances feel and cost. Going thicker is a deliberate premium choice, not a requirement. Going thinner saves a little money but can make your business feel less established.
Finish matters as much as weight
The coating changes both look and feel: matte is understated and writable, glossy is vivid and durable, and specialty options like soft-touch add a velvety premium feel. We cover the trade-offs in matte vs. glossy business cards.
Premium upgrades worth knowing
Beyond weight, you can make a card memorable with rounded corners, foil stamping, spot UV gloss accents, or edge painting on thick stock. These cost more but turn a card into something people keep. Save them for cards that need to make a strong impression.
