A brochure’s fold is not just a manufacturing detail, it is the structure of your story. The fold decides the order people see your panels, how much room each section gets, and how the piece feels to open. Choose the fold first, then design to it.
The common folds
| Fold | Panels | Reads like | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bi-fold | 4 | A simple booklet | Menus, programs, short overviews |
| Tri-fold | 6 | Three quick sections | Classic sales brochure, service lists |
| Z-fold | 6 | An unfolding reveal | Step-by-step, timelines, big visuals |
| Gate fold | 6 | A dramatic opening | High-impact reveals, premium pieces |
| Half + tri (roll) | 6+ | Compact then expand | Detailed product guides |
Bi-fold: clean and simple
One fold, four panels. The bi-fold reads like a slim booklet, front cover, two inside pages, back. It is the right call for menus, event programs, and any piece where you want a clear, uncluttered layout.
Tri-fold: the workhorse
Two folds, six panels. The tri-fold is the brochure most people picture: a cover, an inside spread of three panels, and a back panel that often carries contact info or a mailing area. It naturally breaks your message into digestible sections, perfect for a service list or company overview.
Z-fold: the reveal
Also six panels, but folded like an accordion so it pulls open in a zig-zag. Because all three inside panels reveal at once, the Z-fold is great for sequences, steps, a timeline, or one large image spread across panels.
Design to the fold, not just the flat sheet. Each panel should make sense on its own and lead naturally to the next. Always proof a folded mock-up so panels line up and nothing important lands on a crease.
Scoring matters on heavier stock
On thicker paper, folding without scoring (pre-creasing) can crack the ink along the fold. We score before folding so creases stay clean and your colors don’t split, especially important for dark or heavily inked panels.
