Size is the first decision you make on a flyer or brochure, and it quietly drives everything after it: how much you can say, what it costs to print, and whether it fits a rack, an envelope, or a hand. Stick to standard sizes and you get the best price and the fewest surprises. Here is the short list and what each one is for.
Standard flyer sizes
| Size | Feels like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 4 x 6 in | A postcard | Quick promos, handouts, mailers |
| 5.5 x 8.5 in | Half-letter | Event flyers, menus, inserts |
| 8.5 x 11 in | A full sheet | Detailed flyers, posters, info sheets |
| 11 x 17 in | A small poster | Window signs, big announcements |
The 8.5 x 11 is the workhorse: cheapest to print on standard presses, easy to mail in a standard envelope, and roomy enough for real detail. Drop to 5.5 x 8.5 when you want something lighter and more affordable to hand out in volume.
Standard brochure sizes
Brochures start from a flat sheet and get their final size from the fold.
| Flat sheet | Fold | Finished size |
|---|---|---|
| 8.5 x 11 in | Tri-fold or Z-fold | ~3.7 x 8.5 in (rack-friendly) |
| 8.5 x 11 in | Bi-fold | 5.5 x 8.5 in |
| 11 x 17 in | Bi-fold | 8.5 x 11 in (booklet feel) |
| 11 x 25.5 in | Tri-fold | ~8.5 x 11 in (large tri-fold) |
If you have ever grabbed a brochure from a wall rack, it was almost certainly a tri-fold off an 8.5 x 11 sheet. That finished panel width fits standard display racks, which is why it is the default for visitor centers, lobbies, and trade shows.
Design at the finished size, not the flat sheet, and add bleed. A standard 8.5 x 11 tri-fold fits display racks and mails in a standard #10 envelope, which is why it is the safe default for most businesses.
Don’t forget bleed and safe margins
Any color or image that runs to the edge needs bleed, usually 0.125 in of extra art past the trim line, so a slight cutting shift never leaves a white sliver. Keep important text at least 0.125 to 0.25 in inside the trim as a safe margin. We will flag artwork that lacks bleed before we print.
When to go non-standard
Custom sizes can absolutely be worth it for a premium piece or a specific display, just know they may cost more and waste more paper. If budget and turnaround matter most, a standard size will always print faster and cheaper.
