Digital and offset printing presses compared

When you order printing, the job runs on one of two technologies: digital or offset. You usually do not have to choose, we pick the right one for your job, but understanding the difference helps you order smarter, especially on quantity. The short version: digital wins on small runs and speed, offset wins on large runs and exact color.

When digital wins

Digital has no plates to make, so there is almost no setup cost. That makes it ideal for short runs, fast turnaround, and any job that changes piece to piece, like mailers with different names and addresses. Need 250 flyers tomorrow, or 500 postcards each personalized? That is digital’s sweet spot.

When offset wins

Offset has a higher setup cost because each job needs printing plates, but once it is running, the cost per piece drops dramatically. For large runs, thousands of pieces, offset becomes the cheaper option, and it offers the most precise color control, including exact Pantone spot colors for brand-critical work.

Key takeaway

Think in quantity. Small or personalized runs favor digital for its low setup and speed. Large runs favor offset, because the higher setup cost is spread thin and the per-piece price drops well below digital.

The crossover point

There is a quantity where offset’s lower per-piece cost overtakes its higher setup, and the two methods cross. Below it, digital is cheaper; above it, offset is. That break-even shifts with the specific job, which is why it is worth getting a quote both ways on borderline quantities rather than guessing.
